What is the PSTN Switch Off?

The Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) is a legacy telephone network that has been used for many years to provide voice communication services and data connectivity over copper wires. However, with the high cost of maintaining and a higher demand for faster connectivity, plus the increasing popularity of digital technologies, such as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephony and mobile phones, the use of PSTN has decreased significantly.

To keep up with the changing times, the UK have announced plans to phase out the PSTN network; commonly referred to as ‘The PSTN switch off’. This is the process of phasing out telephony over the old copper lines, meaning businesses are required to upgrade to newer communication technologies by 2025. The future is data-only connections. Although, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing…

The legacy network is limited in terms of data capacity and is not well-suited for modern businesses using the latest communication technologies such as video conferencing, hosted telephony, cloud-based file storage, and other business apps.

Key PSTN Switch Off Dates

Upgrading to Fibre To The Premise (FTTP) data connectivity or Single Order Generic Ethernet Access (SoGEA) will give you access to a much faster and more reliable business broadband connection without the need for a traditional PSTN line at all.
