Preparing for GDPR

Security Intelligence IBM

General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a new legislation that will be enforceable from 25th May 2018 by the European Commission, which stipulates stricter rules regarding how businesses protect their clients’ and employees personal data.

The GDPR is the most prominent change in data privacy regulations in the past two decades. The change will affect everyone that collects, stores, and processes data through conducting business with the European Union (EU).

The Information Commissioners Office (ICO) will have the power to enforce penalties for breaches of ‘personal data’. The definition of personal data has widened to include identifiers such as IP addresses, business email addresses, location data and mobile device identity. The maximum fine you can receive for a breach is 4% of your annual global turnover or €20 million (whichever is greater).

With increasing data flowing through smartphones, tablets and laptop devices; it is vital to begin implementing data protection policies and solutions now. Companies will then be in a much better position to achieve GDPR compliance when it takes effect.

If you aren’t already considering how GDPR will affect your business, you should be.
